It looks like you can also upgrade your existing Xeon processors.

I'm going to try hold out until 07' for the Mac Pro upgrade. I'm thinking that we'll see a $3500 8-core model and ram prices should then be pretty reasonable.

I alluded to this (but incorrectly thought they would be Kentsfield chips) when I saw the new Intel line-up. I'll be holding off as well to see how the Mac Pro develops. The ability to retrofit with new processors is attractive, but at this level there will be a lot of considerations in how one structures the system to get maximum power.

After forcasting a Quad G4 (it was possible but never happened) it's rewarding to see things coming around so quickly. The new 65 nanometer process will allow a lot of things as it stabilizes.

It's time to start looking at exactly what sort of things you really need/want and understanding what will make it happen or you could end up with a whole lot of unused potential. Pray for lower RAM prices!

Also note...

While this may be physically possible, I don't think it will be fically plausible. The prices on these quad cpus will be downright scary and Apple will certainly get a much better deal than any of us. I would be more inclined to sell the current MacPro and buy the new quad-core if one determines the need is there.
