You know it!....more questions....
- Sometimes the composite mode option was greyed out on a clip. I moved the clip around then back in place and it eventually started working again? Is this a glitch?
- Using the motion tab and changing the scale attribute I usually get dynamic feedback, in other words as I drag the scale I SEE the clip growing and shrinking. Sometimes however it wouldn't give me the feedback as a dragged the slider, like normal, and would only update AFTER I let go. ????
- I made an extra video track above my edit to composit some Art Beats Film clutter into the edit. I wanted to speed up a clip that resided on the top track above the rest of the edit and it woudn't let me. Gave me some sort of "trimming" error. I'm assuming because of the way speed changes auto-ripple the timeline. So I was forced to move the clip to the END of the timeline- change the speed...then move it alllll the way back into position. Is there any way around this madness?!
- I was able to drag the end of certain clips beyond the media limit. I noticed this because the motion in the clip would freeze for a split second at the end of the clip. After investigating I realized somehow I was able to drag the edge of the clip beyond it's actual "end". Is this a known glitch?????

I'm sure it does- but there's no turning back....I've gone too far. :tongue3:
Anyone have any ideas about the issues I posted above? TIA

I've never seen that one... More likely it's something like inadvertently having more than one clip selected. Some contextual items are "one clip only" and I think this is one.

This can happen if the sequence set-ups are conflicting to the point that RT playback isn't possible. In the "old days" (FCP4.5 on a G4) things like an "oddly scaled" Canvas might cause this. Today (with a rig like yours) I'd be looking at the number of filters on the clip, all High RT settings, having Multiclip Playback on when not needed, or something of that nature. Another possibility might be a source disk issue (like it's not formatted as HFS+, unjournaled) but that's less likely at this stage.

This is an area where those little Auto-Select icons and the track selector come into play and most of us lack detailed knowledge. You could try locking the edit tracks (audio too!), or ask Ken Stone. :icon_redface:

If the clips have no parental relationships (e.g., they're not cut from a master clip) then I'm at a loss to explain how this could happen other than by a "glitch" or clip-tracking database error. More likely you're simply running past the out point. I have some temporal filters that frequently do this.
What are Vegas 7 Rocks? Some new kind of editing obstacles from Sony? :grinning-smiley-021 And while we're at it, does anyone have a full copy of the Led Zepplin Rules?

That's possible...I believe I had my playhead sync set to OPEN to quickly and easily load each clip automatically into the browser during my final color-correcting phase. I'll have to go back today with a fresh mind and take a look at it. I was about 4 hours in on a 1 minute clip. I'm quite akward right now with FCP but I'm sure that will smooth out over time.

You know I never changed the default formatting for my 2nd HD in the Mac Pro. It's formatted to whatever the default is. So you suggest using disk utility to reformat it to "HFS, unjournaled". What are the options....just HFS and HFS Unjournaled or is it more complicated than that?
I must admit though the clips were: 1) DV-AVI's captured in Vegas which were flagged as not "optimized for multilayer playback" and I was layering clips and compositing them 2) Had them on the system drive- it was such a small project I never even thought to store them on the secondary HD.

Yeah I'll have to look into that. I did indeed have my audio locked but not the first video track. The clip I was trying to speed up was on V2 and composited over the V1 track. I'm not quite sure the autoselect buttons would accomplish this but locking "might". I'll give it a try, thank you!

Yeah they were indeed NOT cut from a longer clip. The clips that were exhibiting this behavior (extending past the logical "end") were the ArtBeats clips and usually happened AFTER adjusting the playback rate of them. I noticed because the clip would hold on the last frame before ending. I knew that the animation was moving thoughout and never "froze" at any point so I dragged the right edge of the clip backward (to the left) and noticed when I went far enough it would show the little vertical sprocket holes in the viewer denoting I was at the end of the clip.
Bizzare but maybe the speed change had something to do with it. I'll go ahead and TRY to reproduce it. If I can mabye it's something I can write Apple about. I've found glitches in Vegas that no one else mentioned- I emailed Sony about it and it was fixed. There was a VERY specific way to make the glitch happen thus it wasn't something that anyone else had run into- just my wacky workflow that found it. Anyway Sony repaired that very glitch in the next build. Kudos to Sony for the open ear.
Thanks again for the continued support. It's really a good asset to me, thank you.

Practice makes everything easier...

Subtle item here: I recommend HFS+, unjournaled. HFS is old school.
I'm still betting that you have some sort of audio issue with the source but have enough raw power to play through most of it. An incompatible audio stream imposes additional processor overhead, as does compositing. Add a couple of filters and another layer of compositing and you could go to "non-RT".
There is no crime here, just reality. I break rules like those all the time, I just know what to expect.

Locking or moving the clip to be adjusted are the two quick fixes...

Makes me wonder what the source data for the ArtBeats clips looks like...
It's possible that for some reason the clip is trying to loop, but for sure it's not normal. Over time, I've had some crazy artifacts using speed controls, including one in FCP4 where the info showed a speed of "nan %" and the app blew up if you tried to load the clip to Viewer. :icon_eek: Try to characterize the problem, you may be on to something.

Make sure if you respond to do so using red type and maybe some italics... we're "this close..." to getting the Rainbow Coalition's "Diversity in Technical Tidbits" award!
