mikkowilson of DVXUser.com has managed to sneak a tape into a pre-production model XH-G1, Canon's upcoming HDV camcorder, and he captured some footage at this year's IBC. He has very kindly posted (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=70735) some screengrabs and video samples for download. Of course, these tests were performed in a very uncontrolled environment, so take them as perhaps a mere suggestion towards the final quality of the camcorder. Thanks, Mikko!

I want this camera. The killer iris control ring is enough to make me die wanting it.

Wow...not very impressive at all. Very muddy and noisy.
But obviously, I am not going to let that be the final arbiter for my decision making becausei t is only one non-optimal example.
Last weekend I had the opportunity to play around with the A1 (photokina fair in Cologne/Germany). Yesterday I stored my Order for a FX-1 and ordered the A1. I'm simply blown away from this piece of technique. I've also seen the new FX-7 and V1 and was not really impressed.
Can't wait till middle of November.......

Theo, how ws the low light ability with the G1/A1?
What made the A1/G1 that much better than the FX7/A1 and what about the FX7/V1 weren't you impresssed with?
A Canon rep will be at our Balimore Videographers Association meeting in November, so I won't be able to get my hands on one until then.
I am seriously either considering the V1 or the A1, with the edge going to the Canon A1 right now due to the better manual external features like Iris ring and more non menu controls on the exterior.
Although the CMOS chip latitude in the V1, could make for some great footage in backlit situations, where CCD technology fails.
Oh I hate to wait.
It was a fair, so there was no Low-Light, but as I told in our german forum, a was a thing of "Look & Feel". I made some testing with the "depth of field" , Zebra, Skin Tones and so on. I was very impressed about the handling. Its no more a toy like the XM2. Some things reminds me on the big JVCs, I'm sometimes working with. Metal switches, the three rings, XLR, a BNC-Video-Out. Yep, thats what I like.
I was at the Sony Place before and had a boring conversation with the folks there. Not well informed, I think they were students, hired for a week or so. I did some testing with the FX7, but as I said before, I'm not impressed. Just a "Look & Feel"-Thing again. Most of the settings via Menu, the whole thing reminds me on my old VX1000 without the aluminum.
For me it was an easy deciscion: 600€ more for a cam, that contains all I want, incl. a real good working stabilizer (that was awesome, really)
Canon, here I come.....
