I was using my Pbook G4 to burn DVDs using DVDSP 4 while editing on another computer. One disk ejected and when I hit apple f to burn another DVD I got the spinning beach ball. I let it sit for a few minutes and then forced quit DVDSP and restarted the computer. Now my only option is to format to the hard drive as the computer doesn't recognize the DVD drive! HELP! What can I do? Will DiskWarrior help?
Thanks,
Joe

You can try DW on the System drive... sounds like it corrupted the system directory or else the actual code got hammered. The second one will require a re-install...
It's conceivable but unlikely that the burner failed, does it show up in ASP? What bothers me is that OS X had a shot at correcting the problem from its journals on restart; if that didn't happen it could have killed some code.
Give DW a shot, no harm can come from it.

Bad news - the drive won't accept a disk. What now? I think it's still under warranty...

Update - good news!
After about 10 minutes on hold all I had to do was...
Shut the power off
remove the battery and power cord
push the power button for 5 seconds
put the battery back in
attach the power
and I am back in business!
Yeah baby! :dance1: :grinning-smiley-021 :notworthy:  :icon_cool:

Ah... OK, now we know.
The procedure you outline is called "resetting the SMU" (System Management Unit), one of those things that you hear about but almost never get the low-down on all it takes care of. It's preferable to resetting the PMU or PRAM because it doesn't make your stupid or kill all the prefs.
I actually call the Apple Tech guys from time to time with "stupid questions" like this one because I simply can't recall all the fixes. My last one was when my system simply refused to boot (or even chime) and needed a PMU reset. No wonder Apple gets such high marks for customer support.
