Multi Clip weirdness

I created a 3 camera multi clip in FCP 5.1. I then put it on the timeline and opened it, played and cut it and all worked fine. Then I go back and do some trimming ( cutting out some dead air here and there) and now when I am going through the rest of the footage the Viewer either turns black with no video at all, or I only get one angle at a time showing.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Is there an issue with Multiclip? It used to work fine!!
Oh and system information is G5 quad 2.5 with 4.5 gig ram, OS 10.4.5, FCP 5.1 and using 2 external FW hard drives. Footage was shot with 2 FX1s, and a HC1. Captured and edited in HDV.

I've found that the safest way to cut out "junk" is to collapse the multiclip first. I think what it does then is cut all the clips at once. I believe the black Viewer thing is because portions of other clips are still there maintaing the original duration.
