Hey Folks.

For those of you who do dance recitals, what is your experience on the number of sales for each recital. I'm assuming it would probably be a percentage of the number of people attending.

For example, say if 1000 people attended a recital, how many would you expect to sell?

It's not necessarily the number of people attending, but the number of students.

We usually get upwards of 75% sales versus the number of students. It can be very lucrative.

Using your number, 1,000 divided by four (parents, grandparents, friends, etc.) and 75 percent of that is what we anticipate and have usually wound up getting. So, about 180 or so sales, based on your number.

Most of our venues have had less than half that, under 500 attending, and like the other post, it really depends on the number of participants. Often, some of these are siblings and parents won't buy one for each. Familes and friends often promise/share copying amongst themselves as well.

On the other hand, some brothers, sisters, cousins want a copy of "my own" and then there are the grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc.

We have a few programs we've covered for several years where we're getting 100 percent-plus sales.

I only do one dance recital a year but have repeat business from the company. I charge them by the hour to shoot...and by the hour to edit. I then charge them a really low cost per disc. They then turn around and sell the discs(usually about $25.00 a piece). It usually covers all their costs for the video. I make most of my money from shooting and editing...they sell the discs for a reasonable price to the parents. Everybody is happy

I have only done 3 so far. 2 were actually musical recitals for kids ages 2-6. The first one I did (musical) there were probably about 400+ people and about 50+ participants. I sold over 75 copies at $20.00 each (Client already had told the parents $20.00 before she even called me). The other two performances were kinda a bust maybe because she raised the price to $30.00 each idk... The dance recital I just did so far has only produced about 30 sales out of about 75 participants. I think this is due in part to the fact that she called me the day of the performance in desperation and I had little time to prepare sign-up sheets to have ready when people walked in. Also, even though there were 75+ participants, there were probably only 100-200 people who attended.

Thanks guys.

Here's another question for you. If you have 2 sets of 2 hrs each - meaning it would be a double disk would you sell each parent a double disk or just ask which set their child was in.

And what would you do if they had a child in each, would you just give them a double disk set or would you charge them more?

Did that make sense???

:) So many questions.
Thanks

I'm doing my first one in a couple weeks, 2 sets of 45 minutes each going on seperate DVD's (Hmmm.....double the sales hopefully) and the person at the dance studio will have a sign-up sheet.

This is my first time and I told her, but I saw the work of the previous videographer, and I feel very conident I can step it up a bit. I watched one video that was 1 camera, with no noticable zooms and pans. The other video used no dissolves, all hard cuts.

Try and get audio from the soundboard, or get a copy of the CD they're using for the show.

I always have just put both DVD's in the case.

Now, if it is two different shows like a beginner and advanced I sell them seperately... even if the same child is in both :)

They are different kids actually. I had suggested putting them on the same DVD, but the dance instructor wants 2 individual projects. Now that it's morning and I think about it, I would probably end up with the same amount of sales, per the percetage of parents ratio as mentioned above.

So far none of the recitals we've done are over 2 hours. Only one of them have 2 acts - a younger kids show first, then an older kids show right after. We sell them separately but have an option to purchase both acts for a reduced rate, i.e. 1 for $35, both for $60.
