View Full Version : WEVA CEAs - how do you market it?

As a follow-up thread to the old, now-vanished, post about whether you plan on entering the WEVA CEAs, my question now is: What are some ways to use your entry/participation in the CEAs to futher market yourself?

If you win something, that's a little more obvious - but what if you take third place or don't place in the top three at all?

What can you do to still use the CEAs as a springboard for your company?

CEA's have lost much of their worth due to the increasing number of non-members who choose not to enter. If you enter, you are only really competing with other WEVA members which are becoming a smaller and smaller, close-knit group.
The slanted entry fees = :bs:

AAA's are THE awards to go for. Wider participation from a broader possible talent base. No slanted entry fees and more user friend regulations. (No 2 entry limit.)

The CEAs have been around since the beginning of time so they are more widely known in and out of the wedding video circle. The AAA's have only been around since last year but have more momentum going for them and for the organization behind them.

Anyways, back to your question:
What can you do to still use the CEAs as a springboard for your company?
CEA's make great door stops/floor mats for your office entrance.

Well, your question is kind of tough to answer...

I would say film and edit every wedding as though you are trying to win an award, and you will be rewarded with a lot of happy couples, and their referals. I just don't know how actually entering a video in a CEA would help your marketing. Most brides don't even care if you are a member of WEVA, let alone if you won an award from them.

What are the AAA's?

I only entered one a couple of years ago when I was still a member and didn't even get an acknowledgement that I had entered, unless you count them depositing my check as an acknowledgement.:confused-smiley-013

The reason I ask is because I'm preparing to LOSE. ha ha ha ha. and I want to know a good method to relay a loss into a successful marketing campaign.

The only good thing about winning either a CEA or AAA is it gives you something to brag about when you issue those press releases. That's all it's good for. Apart from that, you might get coverage in your local bride rag and lends credibility, although as a sales tool to get brides to book? Ha! Now you're just living in la la land.

So I take it you don't think a CEA Loser has any chance of promoting himself or relaying his 'participation' into positive spin.

That's valid, i suppose. It does seem like a stretch.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Oh you can spin it. Just read old WEVA press releases... they're masters of spin! I'm sure if I gave 10 minutes of my brain to this effort, I could come up with some phrases you could use to spin gold from s***.

The 4ever group? Jeeze, I thought the American Automobile Association was sponsoring a video competition. Note to self: pick your monogram carefully.

It adds up to the cost if you are not in US.

I am in Malaysia. I need to pay RM200 to ship it. Too much for me.

I did this a little while ago - and I would like to bring it back ... and I will give credit to the acclaimed.. Mr. Dave Williams for inspiring this idea in me ...

Why not make your OWN CEA's for your work and YOUR clients on your site???

How does it work? Well.. you know your work is great... so what you do is you make every clients video a contender in your award for the best video of the year... and you either decide for yourself which one you liked best - OR you have a client party - or make up whatever you would like for a base of people to watch the videos ( maybe some of your videographer friends) to choose the best one of the year-) and you award the client the best video...

It's totally a win/win situation ... you claim first prize for YOUR video - and YOU can't loose- you can make a press release for the winner... and get some free advertising... etc...

I have found that all the best ideas are just things you need to implement yourself... you could even have a Wedding Film Festival night - where you invite all your past and present clients to watch clips and have cocktails and apps... I mean - you could really make it big....

Being one human, I have alot of great ideas... but not as much implementing power as I would like... but it's coming around... hope you like the idea!

It's a step up from AA.

How about,
''The ONLY one out of 725 entires to be judged NOT eligible for consideration for a CEA award on the basis that it was TOO creative, TOO outside the box, and TOO radical to win an award!''
''You want something different, someone unique, a ONE-OF-A-KIND creative genius working for you? Andrew Hsu!''

Thanks for the response. I love that you are taking time to pop in and drop a few revolutionary bombs on us every once in a while.

Your idea is great. I've been trying to figure out a way to bring my clients back in order to keep my company name in the forefront of their minds. I had one other idea (that I'd like to keep mum for the time being) but yours is great too.

It's not too far off the idea we talked about over Jack and Coke and Bud at the dive bar in the MGM Grand last year. That was a killer idea too. You should keep plugging away at that one.

Thanks for sharing your brave new ideas with us!
Cheers!

The thing I find funny is that I could make up my own awards and have them lining the walls and nobody would know the difference.

I know a guy that wanted a WEVA award so badly he got his Mother to hire him to do a video of his daughter... He spent a year working on green screen and special effects.

To submit to the awards it has to be a paid gig... He lost.

I am just not big on the awards. I am VERY happy for those that win and if it means a lot to them it is even better but I am just not that into them.
