ballgame highlight video! I had a missed call so I returned it. Sounded like a crackhead sniffing/snorting and said "huh, oh yeah dude, *sniff--sniff*, um, this ain't no prank, but uh, *snif--snif* I got some tapes that I want on D V D (prounounced DEEEEEE VEEEEEEE DEEEEEEEE [long e's pronounced]) and can you just tell me how to do it? *snort--sniff*" I asked if he had the internet and he said yeah, I look at all kinds of stuff on there. I told him to search forums about editing and told him about here and other places too.
Then got hateful because I didn't tell him how to edit a video! How can you do that on the phone to a crackhead? I hung up and hoped to God he'll never call me back. I guess that is a drawback to posting personal info on the net.
Anyways, I put this here in case anyone comes into the cutting room looking for basic editing questions. Please post a question here, and don't call someone while snorting powder (or not) during a busy day asking a question that can take weeks to answer.
:rocker: on!

You know, when you get a call like this, they catch you off gaurd. The simple answer is, "No, I can't TELL you how to edit it. But I can edit it for you (for a fee), that's what I DO for a living." Of course, in this case, sounds like you are better off NOT getting his business.
From you description, it sounds like you may have gotten a call from Cheech or Chong.

That is what I say... I do this for a living, I would be happy to edit it for you but I can't help you with how it is done. :jumpgrab:

Yeah I know. I just thought it was rather funny at the moment and wanted to share it. I could tell he was a snorter. In my years running kitchens, I had my fair share of crackheads that came in for a job and such... Also went through some intensive training to learn the signs and how to spot this type of activity-as I worked for a major corporation that didn't tolerate it and was part of my job to "nip it" and get them out. Had a direct line to law enforcement--cool huh, I thought I was there to make food.

Wow, you sure are tough on this issue... :icon_biggrin:
It's simple:
1. Capture the footage to your NLE.
2. Press all the right keys to cut everything that isn't excellent.
3. Export it to that thing that makes the DVDs; don't forget to use the right encoding options.
That's all there is to it!
p.s.: More "in depth" responses involve you sending money...
Seriously, you all know that helping fellow editors is part of what I do, but my response to this sort of thing is usually along the lines of "go ask the guys at CompUSA" unless they give me a reason to think they actually understand the question they're asking.
I've said before (and probably will say again) that there aren't many dumb questions here because of the fact that we know enough to ask them. We have a grip on a subject that 95+% of the computer users out there are clueless about. I'll gladly share with the 5%.

I wouldn't say tough on the basis of him asking how to edit... I know alot of people would like to learn and I don't mind helping in most circumstances.... I wish I could have recorded the conversation so you could hear how he was....

I really enjoyed teaching folks in my area until a couple of them directly went after accounts of mine.
About the third time I saw wedding videos, from people I helped, that looked exactly like mine I finally decided to stop.
It was kind of sad :(

''It will cost you $150 per hour for me to tell/teach you how to edit; $75 an hour for me to edit your DEEEEE VEEEEE DEEEEEE for you.

Not to mention the fact that it would take triple the time to train the person... On second thought... let me train you how to do this... you know... give a man fish etc...
