How many of you are seeing the various problems with the 15" MacBook Pro that it seems are prevalent on the Apple forums?
I'm trying to decide if I should risk version 1.0 of the Macbook Pro.
Thanks,
Scott
Sorry I don't have the answer for you Scott.. But it was just funny to me how the new Apple ads seems to be contradicting themselves. So I just had to make that comment.. :snork_blin: For what it worth I never really like buying the first generations of anything. However I did buy a Dell Dual Core laptop with about the same specs of the Macbook Pro and have had any problems with it. Also I think most of the overheating complaints are those who run bootcamp w/ widows xp. Correct me if i'm wrong though.

And that was relevant to my thread how...? I guess I'm not understanding what you mean by contradicting themselves...? Actually the ads are completely true. Those with experience on both platforms (I mean real experience) will attest to that. I know, I know, you PC people get yer panties in a bunch when Apple makes fun of windoze boxes. It's that whole, "hey that's different than what the majority of people use, I better hate it without actually trying it to see if it's actually better!" mentality that "some" winbox users operate under. Oh, and the overheating has nothing to do with running XP on the MBP. Consider yourself corrected.
If your a PC user please refrain from from reading this thread. I can start a different thread to pointlessly argue which platform is better if you want.
Anyway, ....so any actual MacBook Pro 15" owners out there?
Thanks,
Scott

I read about the same problems in the Apple forum. Supposedly the ones built after a certain date are fixed. I may be buying one soon. I'll tell the salesperson to give me one of the "good" ones, or he'll be seeing me the next day.
My G3 iBook has always run hot, but no whine.

Alright, I've got the 2.0 Ghz, 15 inch Macbook Pro, and yes it whines, and yes, I'm currently in the process of removing my central heating system, as I can now heat my home with my macbook pro.....
Ok, so its not that bad. The whine isn't bad, noticable yes, but somewhat faint. The current theory is that it is caused by the 2nd core being idle. There are several "workarounds", including, my personal favorite, starting the "mirror" widget (uses the built in iSight to act as a mirror), the whine goes away. put the computer to sleep, wake it up, the iSight is off, and the whine is gone. Only a temp solution, but it works. It also should be noted that there is no whine when running windows XP, which leads me to believe it is a software issue more than a hardware issue.
Heat, as I am writing this, My CPU temp is 43*C. The underside of the computer is warm, but by no means hot. Once I start final cut (actually, its running right now, but I'm not using it), or doing more processor intensive tasks, It can get hot to the touch (the underside). This does not affect the usability of the computer, IMO
I've had the MBP for about 2 weeks now. i do not regret the purchase at all.

The heat issue and sleep are related. I have no whining on mine..just heat and sleep...but you should FREAKIN GSEE HOW FAST COMPRESSOR GOES ON THIS THING!
It KILLS my Dualie G5.:rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

Well my Macbook does indeed whine but I only notice it in a quiet room. It's less intrusive than my dual G5 which whines when I click on an audio or video file in the finder.
I have other quibles too after owning it for a week but overall I like it. For $999 I'm not expecting perfection however I would be more bothered if I had similiar issues with say the 17" MBP.

In a completly quiet room I can sometimes hear a high pitched noise coming from the laptop. Not loud enough to notice if your a few feet away though. It's very faint and doesn't really bother me beings I run an airconditioner in my room 24-7 so I can't hear it anyway.
I learned to stay off of the Apple forums- it's a sure-fire way to become paranoid. All you read about are "problems" on there. I personally think this whine/heat problem is exaggerated. The MacBookPro uses an aluminum case to ACT as a heatspreader to help dissapate heat. I'd rather have that than lots of vents and fans like a typical PC laptop.
Regardless I'm not worried. It can burn up and fry right in my lap and I could care less. That's what 3-year apple care is for.
Jordan- bring your MBP to the next GPVA and I'll take a listen- we'll see if we both have this "problem".

Yeah I bought all 3 for my gf. She's a huge fan- she forced me to watch them and I was assimilated. Her MySpace page even uses the theme music from the beginning credits. lol
My favorite comedy sitcom is The King of Queens. A very unlikely show but I watched a few a while back and I'm hooked. Very well written as well....Kevin James is a comic genius. Ever seem him do standup? OMFG!!!!!!

Great lead in to my comment...
The Apple Forums are a wealth of knowledge, but you have to remember that most of the posters there are having problems - It's like a hospital, people are there because they're sick!
If you look at the production numbers for some of those machines and what it takes to make it look like a "huge problem" on their forum, you'd realize that very few issues are really major. However, I like to read many of them just in case I see a similar problem...

Thank you to everyone who replied. I'm pulling the trigger tomorrow.
Anyone need an iMac G5? :) And no, I'm not giving it away... :D
Cheers,
