Due to a (totally) unscheduled power event that left me with two dead UPS', I ran across an excellent UPS deal at Costco.
I just picked up a pair of Tripp Lite Omni1000LCD UPS' for $100 each. Compare to eBay at $107+ 19.45 shipping.
IMHO, running a $5K-15K NLE without a battery "buffer box" is like playing Russian Roulette with a .45 Automatic... we have then on all our systems.
The tricky part is correctly sizing the UPS; most of the "product selectors" don't allow for Dual or quad processor boxes and multiple hard drives, CRTs, etc. The Tripp Lite site has a pretty good one. (Don't take this as a recommendation for Tripp Lite, I've used APC, Tripp Lite, CyberPower, Belkin, they all work OK.)
Don't believe any of the "hold-up" time estimates until you know what the wattage of your NLE is. I saw a unit rated at "up to 145 minutes" but that was with a G4 iMac; my G5PowerMac Dualie with 2 Monitors, 11 disk drives and powered external speakers uses about 6X the power (without the NTSC monitor and deck...)
There are other good deals out there, but this one is handy and if you're not practicing safe computing, it's time to start!
