Hey all,
I shoot with 3 cameras on every wedding. When I upload footage on my 2 stationary cams, I end up with 45+ minutes of unused footage. With Vegas is there any way to actually reduce the size of these clips or actually trim the file like an audio editor? It would save me alot of HD space in the long run. Just curious.

Many NLEs have a way to delete unused footage. If you're capturing in segments (e.g., 3 GB maximum files or limited to 3-minute clips) instead of capturing one giant video file from which you edit, you could potentially save a lot of HDD space by deleting unsused clips.

But shrinking clips to smaller sizes? I don't think that's possible without the use of EDLs and batch capture lists and all sorts of hairy pipeline issues.

My workflow is similar I think. I capture all my footage rather than batch capture just certain parts.

I know in Premiere there is a Project Manager to reduce the overall size of the project by remove unused clips and then if you want to store the entire edit you can remove the renders and usually compress that all down to a DVD.

But you may be referring to editing a low quality version of the video and then outputting your cuts in high quality? I know Avid does this quite well, but I'm not sure about the rest.

No,
I'm just talking about trimming out dead space. I don't even really care about file size really, it just seems that I have 45+ minutes of unused footage on every wedding, you know? I would rather not store that...

I tried the recent DEMO of Vegas. Not my cup of tea.

However, you might try creating "Sub Clips" of the needed portions. I don't know, but from what I read in the manual, that appears to be your best path to a 'work-around". I don't know but that might work if Vegas handles subclips as unique instances of the media..

FCP and Premiere Pro both offer a Media Manager tool that would do exactly what you are trying to do. This feature is not offered from what I can tell in Vegas...

In Vegas you can do sub-clips, but you cannot delete unused footage. It's kind of hard to batch capture unless you are 100% sure what the other camersa have captured. Back in the old analog days, it was easy to have two or three decks running at the same time a pick scenes as they played. Batch capture only what was needed.

I saw this on the Vegas forums.

"You can probably do what you want pretty easily. When you are saving your veg file, there is a checkbox that says "Copy and trim media with project.""

Which sounds like Premiere's method that it will trim the unused parts of the AVI.
