Actually I have 2 completely different companies. We have group health through the other since we belong to an organization that offers this to its members. I have my video producer and all the employees of the other company on the same policy.

Currently, my university job provides my medical insurance and I pay extra to cover my husband (better value than what he can get at his job). When I reach the point where I will go into video full-time, we will either join the plan at my husband's job or look into one of those medical savings account plans.

My day job pays about $1100 per month for my family Blue Cross/Blue Shield policy. It's a doozey and a nice perk. There's no way I'd be able to afford that on my own.

My day job pays my insurance too. That's one thing that keeps me from going FT with this.

To answer my own question, I work full time outside of video, so I pay about $45 a week for family health insurance. Thank goodness i don't utilize it much, but it's nice to know it's there.
We went with an Medical Savings Account in 2000 and never looked back. Its been our only insurance since then - worked out great. In 2003 they changed the name to HSA but its essentially the same thing. Details here:

Wifey with the school system here. But she makes my sorry stupid cig smokin arse pay her the extra $40 a month that tacks on. Yes, I am very close to quiting...I do my last wed vid for the next coupla months this next weekend so I'll be quiting here at the house without worrying about freaking out at a wedding. I've been practicing, going without for a while here and there and then getting a pack on wedding day and various other combos....I have a flier that says quiting takes practice.
I have a buddy in Montana who's dying of three cancers and has no insurance and cant work, and his wife just lost her job. Viva la Canada!

Make sure he looks into Hospice. If he is terminal, he doesn't actually pay. They are awesome and provide so much support, to him and to his family, as well. Either way, sorry to hear this. If he is terminal, I hope he at least has the end of he life HE wants.
