Just curious: Am I the only user of Avid Xpress DV or Pro on this forum? I am still learning the program and so far I have been impressed with the tools I have available for my little projects.

I don't think you are the ONLY user but there aren't many. Paul Holt is an avid Avid editor :)

Glad you can make it here GL or its MOTOX now.. I'm an Avid Liquid Editor does that count?

We use Avid Pro and Express at my tv station. We are phasing them out this week and moving to a server system and P2 cameras. We will be using Canopus Edius to edit with. I will miss the Avid Pan and Zoom effect found under Image. I like it because I can grab a screenshot of a website and zoom in with out much loss in the picture. We also the pan and zoom for pictures too. It was quick once you got used to using it. I hope that Edius has something like pan and zoom.
Just a little background on how we used the avid in a news situation. We used the Avid like you might use it in a SDE. We would capture the video while the reporter wrote the story. I would look over there shoulder to see what sndbites they were using and then trim the soundbites and put them in the timeline in order so all I had to do was drop in their narrartion and cover it with video. It would give me a few extra minutes to do a little something extra. It beat editing tape to tape anyday as long as there was a few extra minutes to capture the video.

I did not know that he has signed up here also... cool. But from viewing his posts on another forum lately... I think that he is either posting while drunk or on WAY too many painkillers after cutting his finger:shock:

The liquid edition came out a few months after I purchased Xpress DV for home use... I am actually kicking myself for not waiting.
How are you liking the program?

If I had it to do all over again, I would be an Avid editor.
Avid is probably the most prevalent NLE in broadcast and motion pictures today. Every once in a while you hear about a movie being edited on FCP, but that's more PR than meat. I know Cold Mountain was suppposedly edited on FCP, but in reality they had a crew of Apple engineers working around the clock to keep those machines happy and working.
Avid is best on your resume.
Then FCP, then Premiere, then Vegas and then sadly, Edius. ("Eedy-wha?" I always get.)

Well haven't trie anything else other than liquid. I started with the Pinnacle family.. First with studio then the Liquid. With liquid 7.1 update looks like most of the major bugs have been fixed. Liquid is a great program but it is very picky on what kind of hardware you use. Specifically your video card. Also with Liquid 7.1 you get the Magic Bullets filter very nice!!

Cool, thanks for sharing. I have never worked in a news environment so it is interesting to hear how you work. Good luck with the system change-over.

It was just plain old dumb luck that I now edit with Avid. When I took a new job position at work, I could choose between using one of the macs with FCP or the pc with Avid. As I knew next to nothing about macs... I jumped right on the Avid system and started learning. But what really made a difference was being sent to a week-long training class on the software.
While not many people know about Edius... you sure can do some cool things with it (evident by the SDE you posted a few days ago)

Thanks Becca.
I'm a firm believer in the artist's need for a good tool, but I'll never say one tool is superior to another. I used to use Premiere and I loved it, but Edius was more stable and helped me work faster. Premiere had more and better filters but Edius had better 3D tools.
In the end, it's all about the hands that the NLE is put in. Give J-Mag Windows Movie Maker and he'll still edit circles around Uncle Charlie sitting at a hollywood Avid station.

This will be my third different system to learn. I started on premiere 5.1, moved to different versions of avid and here we are with a new system. I just found out that MS Downey is training us..small world:razz:
